“This trip will definitely act as a stress buster. I came to London to take stock of my life and fix what’s lacking. I wanted some time to set right whatever mistakes I have made in the past. But some sensible people tell me that my fault is that I made no mistake in the first place,” said Govinda philosophically.

Govinda wants to do an action film with stunts of international standard
By Sunita Bothra on Wednesday, November 5, 2008

. . .

Govinda
has hired a martial arts and physical trainer and is working on his physique.

Govinda wants to be a healthy handsome and fit. Dharamji has always been my role model.. when I look at myself in the mirror I see glimpses of him in myself. That makes me feel good."

Govinda admits that "I've done action films in the past like Hatya  and Shola Aur Shabnam. But they were not full-on actioners.  I now want to do an action film with stunts of an international standard. I have already lost a lot of weight.  But it is not enough. I want to lose some more." On a recent trip to London, Govinda discovered yoga.  Govinda's life -style has changed completely.  Thanks to yoga.  And though he does not admit it, it was Celina Jaitley who introduced him to a new lifestyle.

Says Govinda, "Yoga has changed my life. No matter what my schedule, I have to do yoga every morning.  It is not about just losing weight.

I lost a lot of weight earlier this year when I was shooting in Bangkok with Suniel Shetty for Loot.  I can get into tight clothes without cringing."

Govinda: "Bring 'em on!"

The resurrected star gives it back to the gossipmongers spreading rumours
By Abhijit Mhamunkar . Sep 19, 2008

For the last few months, Govinda has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. It was reported recently that he was so paranoid for his life on the sets of Do Lucky  he demanded the mobile numbers of all the assistant directors.

Then there were rumours of him performing some mumbo-jumbo poojas and slapping director Neeraj Vohra. Stories like these and more have made many ask that big question: 'Has Chi Chi finally lost it?'

We try to find an answer.  Edited excerpts from an interview:

. . .

You had allegedly slapped director Neeraj Vohra…
Has the director come out in open about this?  Who has spread these rumours let them come out in the open and question me boldly about it. Why are they talking behind my back?  I have had no problems in politics.  People who are troubled by the fact that I am in politics are trying to do this to me.

Salman Khan launching Narmada?
No! Salman is a good friend and has helped me a lot. He has resurrected my career. It will be wrong of me to ask him for another favour. Salman Khan, Suneil Shetty, Sohail Khan, Akshay Kumar and David Dhawan are the men who have stood by me during my good times as well as bad. I am very grateful to them. I hope someday I will get a chance to repay what they have done for me.

Finally, Sohail Khan says you always keep embarrassing his family. Your reactions.
(Laughs) Yeh unka badappan hai! They believe in the adage – Neki kar aur dariya mein daal. (Too priceless to be translated)

Govinda’s daughter Narmada is all set to make her Bollywood debut and the buzz is that Govinda’s buddy-bhai Salman Khan will be launching the PYT.

. . .

And it is not just his personal life that Govinda is thrilled about. A television report that Govinda’s political constituency in Mumbai North is the second-most prosperous and well-developed in Mumbai has left Govinda feeling elated. He now plans to visit Sonia Gandhi with the information.

“I don’t think she has heard it yet. The news will reach her soon. But the survey saying that my constituency has improved to this extent has left me feeling happier than I have felt since a long time. My detractors have been having a field-day. Everyone has been taking potshots about me being an amateur politician. And now they’ll have to find someone else to gherao,” he said triumphantly.

Govinda is also changing his approach to his filmi career. “I’ve four films in hand which I’ll complete by October. In November I start Mani Ratnam’s film. And then I’ll do only one film at a time. There was a time when I simultaneously did 40 films,” he says.

According to the source, the shoot of the film started after Govinda apologised to Neeraj Vohra. When contacted, Govinda said, "It's a rumour and there is no truth to it."

As expected, Neeraj Vohra too denied the incident by giving his own version of the commotion on the sets. He said, "I am also an actor which is why I always emote a scene myself to show how it should be enacted.

I think people on the sets thought that there was some problem as it was a high-voltage drama scene. I guess that's why people thought that the shouting and slapping was actually a fight between Govinda and me. But there is no truth to it."

Deepika Padukone is the fittest star in Bollywood: Govinda
August 28th, 2008

Q. You have been for a long time now in Bollywood. Which were your best days of your professional career?
A. Starting from Shola Aur Shabnam  to 1997 released film Bade Miya Chote Miya, was the best period of my life as during that period I did some good roles and that too with innocence.

Q. Now too the innocence in visible in the roles you play. How do you manage to treasure that innocence?
A. As one takes care of his/her house so that it looks attractive to him/her as well as others. Likewise one should also make sure to regularly clean his/her mind thinking of Saraswati Maata. I also do the same thing.

Q. Now-a-days you are known to divert your attention more towards spiritualism; any special reason behind it?
A. I am moving towards spiritualism due to my mother. For the start, I was very hot-tempered and had to indulge in fights. But once I got inspired by my mother’s teachings and became her student, life changed for me. I learnt a lot of good things from my mother. At the same time I learnt that those who are hot tempered get to meet people who are much more hot tempered than him/her.

Q. At the start of your career you portrayed a lot of serious characters. But since around ten years you are mostly seen in comedy flicks. Why?
A. Frankly speaking, I was tired of portraying serious roles. I started working in the industry when I was 21 years old. Before that, since I was fourteen I have to help my mother in household works like, sweeping, washing clothes, etc. I have worked a lot throughout my life. Due to this I started going through a lot of stress and comedy brought a new freshness in my life.

Q. How do you manage a brilliant timing in comedy with your co-stars which off course is a very important aspect in comedy?
A. See, in comedy more than an actor, a director has to be good in his work. If the director is good then you can even succeed in doing a comedy act with a lamppost.

Q. Amongst all the comedy flicks you have worked in until now, who has been your favourite co-star?
A. I have enjoyed working with all the stars whether he is Kader Khan, Anupam Kher, Satish Kaushik, Satish Shah, Chunky Pandey, Shakti Kapoor or even Karishma Kapoor. Whoever works with me always gives their 100 percent. Even my recent pairing with Salman Khan was appreciated by the viewers.

Q. Which film would you rate the best amongst the various movies you have done under the direction of David Dhawan?
A. My favourite films are Deewana Mastana  and Swarg.

Q. Which has been the toughest character to play in your career?
A. I haven’t got any of such character yet.

Q. When would we see you acting in a serious cinema?
A. Not until I am satisfied that the film is going to be a super hit.

Q. There is known to be two comedy schools in Bollywood now-a-days; one run by Priyadarshan whereas other by David Dhawan. How would you differentiate between the two?
A. (laughs) See, the cheque that one gets from both the sides is the same. Their faces too match with each other. To be frank, when it comes to comedy cinema, South always has an upper hand. Even the films David has made have been inspired by South movies. The only difference has been in the way the script has been treated.

Q. Which is your favourite comedy scene?
A. I love watching all the scenes from Dilip Kumar starrer Kohinoor and Ram Aur Shyam.

Q. Whom would you name your three all time favourite stars?
A. Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. Dilip Kumar is such an institute of acting that anyone who copies him can become a superstar. Dhramendra is my favourite hero and I have got a lot of respect for Amitabh Bachchan. Even today he is very active as an actor. It wouldn’t be wrong to call him the gem of India.

Q. Have you ever copied anyone?
A. I copy everyone. From whomsoever I get the right energy, I copy from there.

Q. Today you have got everything. Any such thing which you still desire for?
A. I haven’t got anything yet. Infact I think that I have just started my career.

Q. It’s been said that the people who do comedy are very happy in life. What do you have to say about the same?
A. It’s very true. But some times you come across some kind of people who joke about your happiness and then you have to show him some of your punches. It’s good to be nice and happy but only till someone else doesn’t use your nature in a wrong way.

Q. According to you, who are the fittest actor and actress in Bollywood?
A. Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone are the fittest stars in Bollywood. Even Akshay Kumar is very fit but Amitabhji being my favourite; I would like to give him extra marks.

. . .

Looks like you’re back with a vengeance...
Yes, along with Money Hai Toh Honey Hai , I completed Chal Chala Chal  and Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai . I have also finished Loot. And I’ll complete David Dhawan’s last schedule in October. So, by the time I start to shoot for Mani Ratnam, I’ll have finished five films this year. From November, I’ll be more relaxed and doing only one or two films. I’m looking at doing good films, working with good filmmakers. That will curb rumours about me that start floating during the making of a film.

Rumours?
When I’m not in India... People feel Govinda is not here to deny, so let’s try and tarnish his image. At a political event, whenever I go there are between 50,000 to one lakh people. I stopped attending rallies because handling such a large crowd was difficult. Now people fear I’m going to come with more fame. These five films that are lined for release are all big banners and there will easily be publicity of at least 17 crore. They are worried that if I keep getting positive publicity, I will contest again. They are scared!

. . .

So how do you plan to take on your detractors?
They are within my range and although I’ll try my best to forgive them, there could be repercussions. And I swear I’m not being harsh. There’s a limit to everything. They had better not mess with me. Main pehle wala seedha-saadha Govinda nahin hoon .

King kaun?

Posted On Friday, August 15, 2008

It’s star v/s director in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s King Con. Govinda left schedule midway, furious about last minute script changes; plans to quit

. . .

The buzz is that Govinda did not complete the film schedule of Tigmanshu Dhulia’s con caper in London and left from there in a huff.

It seems the actor is unhappy with the project as he was completely unaware of last minute script changes. And not just that. Apparently, the actor was not informed about the title of the film. Govinda has been told that the film is called Showman.

However, the film's cast and crew inform of differing titles like King Con and Con Flick. Govinda is agitated about the situation. “Yeh sab nahin chalega. Why do these title hassles happen to me only? I have been through this title-change recently (Money Hai To Honey Hai). As far as I know the film is called Showman. And as far as I am concerned there's no other title for the film,” he declared.

But what exactly happened in London? Apparently, Govinda was uninformed about filming a scene where he was supposed to do a Bollywood item number with Celina in the Buckingham Palace before an actress playing Queen Elizabeth. A source said, “The dance was supposed to be hilarious cultural show in front of the Queen, where couples from different countries and nationalities are shown dancing.”

When we asked Govinda about his supposed homage to Hollywood, Govinda said, “Mujhe dance karna hai aur mujhe khud nahin pataa? (How come I have not been informed of a dance that I need to perform?) I haven't been told about any such dance sequence in front of Queen Elizabeth, or her lookalike.

Am I mad to do something so cheeky? After Money Hai To Honey Hai, I have decided I will not be a part of any scene that disrespects public figures (the film had a spoof on Vijay Mallya and Ekta Kapoor). Earlier, I have done a song 'Sarkaiyee lo khatiya'  which the public took offence to. I'll never again do anything that will hurt public sentiments.”

He added, “I have heard that before! Even Ganesh Acharya loved my work and told me Money Hai To Honey Hai would revolve around me. But he did not keep his word and shot certain scenes without my knowledge. I won't allow that to happen again. People are free to comment on my suspicious nature. But once if I see dishonesty happening behind my back, I will not remain quiet.”

When contacted, a discernibly upset Tigmanshu said, “What can I say? Yes, Govinda has come back and we couldn't complete the schedule. I don't know whether he's upset. But I believe he returned to shoot for another film.

If he claims he's unaware of the scene with the Queen, what can I say? Govinda did feel that that certain scenes in the film were disrespectful and I have changed them. But the Bollywood song before the Queen is very much part of the script. As for the title of the film, nothing has been finalised as yet.”

Tigmanshu is hopeful about a rapprochement and said, “But Govinda is busy with other projects. And I have to prepare for my bio-pic on Pan Singh Tomar with Irrfan Khan. So I don't know what will happen to this Govinda project.”

As things stand now, the Govinda-Tigmanshu project has reached a stalemate.

Govinda is relieved. He has cleared his loan of Rs 18 crore
Posted On Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Vickey Lalwani

Life is now beautiful for Govinda. Free of loans, mortgages, finances et al. Recently, he paid off Rs 18 crore that he had borrowed from various financers.

Our source close to Govinda informed us, “Govinda was in a terrible state when producers stopped signing him. He had taken almost Rs 12 crore as loan. David Dhawan’s Partner gave him a new lease of life.”

We checked out with Govinda if it was true that he had cleared all his debt. He said, “Yes, I had taken a loan of Rs 12 crore from financers which actually amounted to Rs 18 crore with the interest.

It was a difficult time for me but now I am at ease.”

So, which film provided him with the biggest booty? “I won’t single out any particular film,” said Govinda. “I charge more or less the same amount for every film.

But yes, I believe that my market price is justified now. Even the film industry has a different perception of me than it had four years ago.

But I don’t charge insane amounts. Many actors charge two to three times my fee, but it doesn’t bother me. I am happy with the money I am getting and more importantly, I am busy,” he added.

Govinda becomes choosy
20 Aug 2008, 0000 hrs IST, MALLIKA MULHERKAR ,TNN

A couple of years back, he was looking for the right role that would put him back on the road to stardom. And today, he has loads of them.

Explains Govinda, “It’s going to be a variety, a lot of entertainment though. Previously, I did whichever movie I got since I had to get rid of my debts. But now, since I’m back on track, it’s going to be only big banner films for me.

With the masti and mazzak , I will be more professional in my work. I have films like Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai, Do Lucky, Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Chal Chala Chal, Paathshaala, Life Partner and David Dhawan’s Do Not Disturb . I’m also giving a voiceover for an animated movie Ab Dilli Door Nahin and an untitled movie. So, a lot to look forward to,” informs Govinda.

And, what character does he have in Nikhil Advani’s animated film? “Watch the movie, and check it out. The naughtiest character might just be mine,” laughs the actor.

There was talk about his daughter Narmada directing a film for him. How true is that? He rubbishes the rumours, “Neither Narmada nor me are getting into direction. Rumours are big business, and the quickest way to get back at you when people are against you. When I won the elections, many couldn’t take that fact and wanted to badmouth me. There are people who have a lot of money to spend and start these rumours. Since I don’t have the money to shut them up, it will keep going on.”

So, are the rumours involving him and Celina Jaitley part of the same smear campaign? He responds, “My opposite party is really big, but I am stronger. Like I said, this is just a way to start badmouthing a person, and splash dirt on them. The press has always been nice to me, and given me a chance to clear myself. There will be a day when I, too, will have enough resources to come out clean and shut this rubbish off.”

Govinda has never shirked from openly thanking the people in the industry, who backed him when things weren’t going right. Does it help to have good friends in the industry? “I think friendship is a human necessity and helps everywhere. I respect people who cherish and sustain a relationship with you in all walks of life. Kabhi kabhi main khulle aam izzat dena zaruri samajhta hoon. An honest person is always appreciated. He also learns from his mistakes, and can start again,” he asserts. And, who can dispute him on that?

Sindh Today
Govinda, Ganesh Acharya - another filmy friendship gone kaput
Aug 15th, 2008 | By Sindh Today

Mumbai, Aug 15 (IANS) It’s sad but true. Choreographer-turned-director Ganesh Acharya, who made Govinda dance to innumerable hit songs in the past, has fallen out with the star.

The reason? They couldn’t see eye to eye on the way Acharya’s second directorial venture Money Hai To Honey Hai was shaping up.

‘Ganesh Acharya had promised me that Akshay Kumar would be making a guest appearance for one of the songs Mash-a-Allah. The next thing I know, Ganesh himself was dancing on screen in that song. Yeh ek bhanyankar surprise thaa (It was a terrible surprise for me),’ Govinda told IANS.

‘It was something beyond my imagination to see Ganesh in Akshay’s place. There was a vast difference between what Ganesh had said and what he finally delivered,’ he added.

Recounting a string of incidents that led to the sad fall-out between the two, Govinda burst into peals of laughter. He said the final product was different from the script that the director narrated to him.

‘Film ko badi maar maari hai critics ne (Critics have trashed the film)… that needn’t have been. What Ganesh narrated to me and what he finally shot and edited are somewhat different - I warned Ganesh not to make a lengthy film. I told him to keep it down to approximately two hours and stop getting lost in subplots. I asked him to cut 12 minutes of the playing time. He didn’t listen to me. That’s okay.

‘From now on I’ve decided to be only an actor in a film. There’s no need to advise the director specially if he thinks he knows best.’

Govinda regrets the termination of such a long association.

‘I don’t know how it happened. Even members of one’s own family stop listening to you after a point. Ganesh felt I shouldn’t interfere in his writing skills, and that I should just listen to him on the sets.

‘Thoda ussmein director jag gaya (the director in him become aggressive),’ the actor observed sarcastically.

Govinda especially objected to the introduction of Prem Chopra’s character.

‘He never discussed it with me. I didn’t even know about this character’s existence in the plot. When I finally saw the film, I asked Ganesh, ‘Bhaiyya, yeh kya hai?’ I think somewhere while discussing the commercial angle with me, Ganesh lost his way.

‘I can’t figure out when Prem Chopraji came into my picture. And why. He’s a senior actor and I felt Ganesh was portraying him crudely. I did tell him that.’

Govinda feels Acharya, who debuted as a director with ‘Swami’, was influenced by another actor in the movie.

‘I don’t want to name anyone. But Ganesh suddenly stopped listening to my advice. Suddenly he withdrew from any interaction with me. He became very quiet. He was lost in his own world. Ganesh left me no choice but to keep silent after that. Bhaiyya, chup hi rehne mein bhalaai hai (I thought it’s better for me to keep quite).

‘But I’ll say this: My films usually speak a language of innocence. That was lost in Money Hai To Honey Hai. I thought I was doing a film about team spirit. Little did I know that so much bitterness would creep in. Even in the choreography I found Upen Patel’s song to be dicey.’

Govinda didn’t appreciate the spoofs on TV tycoon Ekta Kapoor and businessman Vijay Mallya.

‘I don’t believe in poking fun at people who have achieved so much. I didn’t know about Ekta. But I was told about Vijay Mallya and Laxmi Mittal’s names being used. I was told they were being mentioned with reverence, so I kept quiet.’

The ‘Honey’ experience has left Govinda sober.

‘I’ve decided to be an obedient worker on the sets, no more. I tried to reason with Ganesh to a point. I failed. We decided to work together because of our long-standing friendship. But as the shooting progressed we became distant. That’s when I became silent and moved to one corner. He suddenly changed. This often happens in this industry.’

Money Hai Toh Honey Hai  has Govinda doing what he is best at - comedy

What is the name of your character in Money Hai Toh Honey Hai?
I play Bobby who wants to enjoy life and make a lot of money. He is of the opinion that money gets you the good things in life.

Do you feel that it’s true of real life too?
A lot of things happen in life. But this feeling is generally seen in youngsters and students who have no money or very little for enjoyment. There is frustration as they cannot settle down in life. Ladki bhi nahin milti, in such cases. There is struggle all the time, be it for employment, girl or marriage. Nothing is easily available. (laughs).

You are the badshah of comedy. How different is MHTHH  from all your earlier comedy films?
Lately I have decided to experiment with my roles. I do it like it’s a naukri. I try not to get too involved in the project yet give my 100 per cent to it. I ensure that it is sold at a good price and also recovers its cost. The message that the film conveys is that everyone should join hands to do something creative and share whatever is available ultimately.

When the casting for MHTHH was being done, the makers were insisting that I take it up because I had refused their previous film Swami. I had initially refused MHTHH  as well. But Ganesh was adamant and he managed to convince me to do it. Idid the film only for him. MHTHH  is total fun. All of us enjoyed making of this film.

Is it true that you played a lot of pranks on your co-stars?
I am a very shy person (laughs). Actually every evening after pack-up everyone made six packs.

Everyone was into work-outs, is it?
No I mean six pegs (laughs aloud) but everyone was sincerely at work on time the next morning.

You are well-known for never being punctual on the sets. But you made amends for MHTHH ?
Yes, on two occasions I was on the sets before the director. In fact, I reached even before the safaiwallah came. I was very happy that I had to wait for Ganesh. It was a different experience. All my directors will be shocked to hear this and will wonder about this change and why it didn’t happen earlier. (laughs)

As a dance director, Ganesh has choreographed several of your songs. How did you find him as a film director?
I believe that you have to respect the calibre of your director. Ganesh respects me a lot and so he gave me creative freedom. He was even open to suggestions. He is known to be a very good dance director and now as a film director, he is in the process of proving that he can make it work. He has a lot of energy. There is a lot of freshness in MHTHH. As far of improvement in direction is concerned there is no limit to learning.

I have been in the film industry for 24 years now but even today I learn so many new things. Goddess Saraswati is so vishal, so huge that even the ocean feels small compared to Her.

You have been paired with a very young heroine. What do you have to say to that?
I was also a little apprehensive and I told Ganesh that. He appreciated my concern but said it was Hansika’s wish to work with me. Though not very convinced, I changed my mind when I saw her acting. I saw the potential in her and my fears were put to rest. What’s more important is the communication and the timing of the person opposite you that gets translated onto the screen.

For an actor of your calibre, there are a lot of expectations. Have you adapted to the new age?
One never knows what clicks with the audience. One can just go with the flow. As for jelling with the new age, I am learning too fast that I am getting tired now. I am doing a lot of films. And I shall be the first hero, after a long time, to give six releases in a span of one year. The process of learning in this year has been so vast that I cannot express it in words. Every day has been a learning experience.

You are repeatedly saying that lately you got to learn a lot. Elaborate.
You will notice a new, changed and polished Govinda in the films to come. I say it has been a learning experience for me because today I see things with a different vision. I feel this phase is like my new beginning as an actor in the film industry. This is my aagaman and my comeback.

But people consider you an institution.
I don’t know what has come over them! (laughs). I feel in this one year Goddess Saraswati has been very pleased with me and has bestowed all her love on me.

There are two prominent types of comedy schools in the industry; of David Dhawan and Priyadarshan. What difference do you find in their films?
There is definitely a vast difference in the treatment. But if you notice all the films that David Dhawan has made till date have mostly found their base in the South and they have all been superhits. He made Aankhen from Do Phool. Rasakutty became Raja Babu, Chinna Thambi was remade as Hero No 1 and Haseena Man Jayegi was a take off from Pyar Kiye Jaa. Biwi No 1 was also a remake. Priyadarshan also makes films based from the South.

Do you believe in imitating other actors?
What is wrong in that? I am copying everybody all the time. It is just a matter of learning from others.

You were one of the first film stars to get into television with Jeeto Chappar Phaad Ke. Are you open to more shows again?
Money hai toh honey hai. (laughs) When there is money why not do it?

Do you believe in blogging that is the in-thing today?
I feel since everyone is into it, I better stay away from it. (laughs)

What are the films in the pipeline?
I have Ravi Chopra’s Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai,  Loot,  Chal Chalachal,  David Dhawan’s Do Not Disturb,  Jagmohan Mundhra’s film tentatively titled Excuse Me PleaseChai GaramLife Partner and a film for Sohail Khan.

Your daughter Narmada is now taking her first steps in Bollywood. What are your aspirations for her?
After Nammo met with an accident, she went into depression. I wanted to see her happy and so I decided to do anything for that. She too is trying her best and will soon be going to London to take lessons in acting. Fortunately, unlike me, she will not have to go through the rigours of a struggler.

What about your son Yash?
He is still too young to decide for himself but since the time I joined politics, he has faced facts of life from close quarters and now I feel he is like a grown-up boy who knows his mind.

You have also faced a lot of controversies not only on the professional front but also personally.
This is what fame does to you. You have to learn to take it in your stride.

Kollywood is abuzz with news that ace director Mani Ratnam has signed the biggest ever deal in the history of south Indian cinema, to do a three-version film in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.   . . .

The Hindi version will feature Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Govinda in a negative role. Confirming that he has signed up for the movie, Govinda told TNN: “I am actually doing a film with Mani Sir. Isn’t it every actor’s dream to work with him? We met recently and I heard about my role, which interested me a lot. It is an intense film and my role will definitely surprise the audiences.” Abhishek, who scored his first solo super hit with Guru, is all excited about this new untitled film, for which he has given bulk dates.

The Tamil and Telugu version will have Vikram doing Abhishek’s role while Aishwarya Rai will be the common heroine for all the three versions. It is going to be a tight rope walk for Ash as she has to juggle her dates with Shankar’s Rajinikanth-starrer Robot during the same period. The role to be performed by Govinda will be essayed by Pritviraj, who started his career in Tamil in a villain’s role in Kana Kandein.   . . .

Wohi hoga joh manzoor-e-khuda hoga: Govinda
21 Jul 2008, 0029 hrs IST, JAYA DRONA ,TNN

The last time Govinda was in Delhi, he was here to shoot for a movie. This time also, the stage is set, but the drama of the impending trust vote is as real as it gets.

The Congress MP from Mumbai was in Delhi on Saturday, and flew back to Mumbai the same day, only to return yesterday. “I was in Delhi on Sunday to attend a dinner with the PM,” he says.

Twice in two days – that’s better attendance than he’s had in Parliament. The MP attended Lok Sabha proceedings on only one out of the 64 days in the last three sessions in the Parliament. How’s it going, considering the trust vote is almost upon them now? “It’s going great. I have been in Delhi for two-three days now. The mahol is perfect,” he says. “The country has to progress and it will, with the N-deal coming through,” he adds. A few days ago, when asked about the date of the trust vote, he had said, “I’m not too sure.”

Now, what does he think is going to happen? “Dekhiye, wohi hota hai, jo manzoor-e-khuda hota hai. However, there is a positive wave towards India in the world. Everybody is looking at us and supporting us in this deal. And we need to be very positive in our thought process too. That’s the need of the hour,” he says. Apparently, Chi Chi had to postpone one of his shooting schedules for Tigmanshu Dhulia’s film in London to be present in Delhi for the trust vote. The producer of the film, Vinay Sinha, has confirmed that the shooting with Govinda would begin on July 23, but the rest of the unit would reach a day earlier.

Govinda perturbed by Big B comparisons

Indo-Asian News Service

Sunday, July 20, 2008: (Mumbai):

Actor Govinda is on the edge of his patience these days, perturbed by constant comparisons with Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan.

"I'm Amitji's biggest fan. And that's why these comparisons are becoming a bit too much for me to digest," Govinda told IANS.

Though he's not willing to talk about it openly, Govinda is also not amused by the constant reference to him in the context of the "Govinda Govinda" chant in Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar and its sequel Sarkar Raj.

At a recent awards function Govinda's picture was flashed on stage while the Sarkar Raj theme raged on.

"I won't say anything more," says Govinda diplomatically. "But I'll say this. God bless all those who are using my name for their own reasons. I'll also say this. Don't try the patience of a patient man."

"My will power is about to give way. Now I've reached a stage where I'll react even if one hair on my head is tampered with."

The final straw was a reality show where choreographer Saroj Khan praised Govinda to the skies... but relatively speaking.

Sighs Govinda: "I'm very grateful to Sarojji for all the wonderful things she has said about me. I respect her a lot. My daughter Narmada has been training in dance with Sarojji."

"In fact she'll be directing a film for me soon. I know she meant well. But why am I being constantly compared with Amitji? Main to naukar hoon (I am just a servant). He's the true king of the entertainment industry. I played the naam ka (namesake) Raja Babu. He's the true Raja Babu."

Govinda seeks blessings
Indo-Asian News Service

Saturday, July 19, 2008: (Mumbai):

Bollywood star Govinda, his wife and two children prayed at the revered Siddhi Vinayak temple for divine blessings as the actor feels his family has been facing a trying time.

"I had taken a vow on my family's behalf to hold a prayer ceremony at the temple. Too much has been happening too frequently and we need the gods to be slightly benevolent towards us. Now I feel the worst is really over. Things can only get better," said Govinda.

"It was something I've never done before in all my years in Mumbai. Of course I've always been devout and I do believe in praying regularly. But I've never had a havan (fire ceremony) in a temple before," Govinda said after the ceremony.

"At this moment, when things have just started going well for us, we need all the blessings and best wishes we can get. I feel god has been testing me for reasons best known to him," he added

David Dhavan & Govinda back with Do Knot Disturb

7/5/2008 9:35:14 AM

The Jodi No 1 is back --David Dhavan & Govinda. After 16 movies together, the duo's latest offering-- Do Knot Disturb--hit the floors with a stellar starcaste of Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta, Sohail Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Govinda himself. But undoubtedly the USP of the multi starer is David Dhavan and Govinda's hit bearing.

When asked about his experience of working with Director David Dhavan Govinda said, "We have always worked with simplicity and we have been successful because of that. We did not do a lot of planning as to this persons role will be like this and that person's role will be like that. This truth and the love between us is our strength."

As usual the comic in 'Chee-Chee' came alive on the sets and this time he had a partner in crime --Sushmita Sen. Looks like Sush was definitely competition to the jokester Govinda. When quizzed about what it was like working with Sush and the othere Govinda said, "What can i say ? They played around with my name." Sushmita Added to Govinda's statement saying, "We call him 'Chee-Chee' with love."

Apparently through out the shoot Govinda at Sush's mercy. He said, "Till now she hasn't called me in a normal manner. Sometimes she calls me 'Chee', and at other times she calls me 'Chee-Chee'. To top it off, she calls me that just before a romantic shot. "

Jokes apart , the big question which everyone has been contemplating is , "What is this uniquely titled film--Do Knot Disturb-- all about?"

We managed to catch up to actor Riteish Deshmukh, but unfortunately could not get much out of him. When asked about the movie he said, "It's an interesting film. It's got lots of things that i cant tell you right now."

With no luck with Riteish, we tried getting some information from Govinda and Sushmita, but that attempt too didnt work. All Govinda said about the film is, "There is some masala in it. I think that is expected from David's films." Sush added, " You will have to ask the Director about the movie, because we atre not allowed to say anything about it.

Our last resort was the movie's Director--David Dhavan. He too did not crack when asked about the movie. Instead he very  humourously brushed off the question and said, " It's like I'm having an affair. How can i tell you ? No i will not."

Well the caste an crew of the film do not want to be disturbed about the film just yet. So we'll just have to wait and watch how it turns out.

Govinda on a Losing Spree

Indo-Asian News Service
Thursday, July 3, 2008: (New Delhi):

Looking good and staying fit is important in showbiz and comic actor Govinda, who made a comeback with Partner, is currently working hard to get into shape and says it is essential to eat right.

"Yes, I am working on my looks. It is important to change over time and one should not stick to one thing (or a look) for very long," said Govinda.

"I don't eat!" he quipped on being asked what makes him so fit. "I eat less for taste and more to stay fit. Basically, I eat for fitness."

Though he is 44, Govinda's flexibility still matches new-age actors when it comes to dancing.

"People dance for various reasons - emotion, health, curing diseases. I dance for entertainment," said Govinda, who was in Delhi to shoot for David Dhawan's Do Knot Disturb.

The movie also stars Sushmita Sen and Ritiesh Deshmukh. "The film is a mirch masala family drama," Govinda said, but refused to divulge details about the storyline.  . . .

Govinda is young at heart
3 Jul 2008, 0000 hrs IST, JAYA DRONA ,TNN

Govinda is literally leading a younger life, by his own admission.

He’s working in more than half a dozen films for the youth and living life to the fullest, he said on the sets of Vashu Bhagnani’s David Dhawan-directed Do Knot Disturb  in Delhi recently.

“I was quite orthodox till some time ago,” he says. “I’d stay away from parties and follow the work-and-back-home schedule. However, my life changed pleasantly when I realised that society is one big family too. When I realised that there is just one life and we should live it to the fullest, I changed. My daughter Narmada is all set for Bollywood. She’ll make her debut in a year or two. She had hurt herself on the face some time back and is recovering now. As soon as she does, I’ll launch her in a big film. Now, the restrictions that I impose are within legal limits and nothing more. When Nammo told me that she wants to work in films, I said ‘Please do’.”

And what are the films that he’s doing ‘for the youth’? “The one I’m currently shooting – Do Knot Disturb – is a romantic comedy. Thodi masti toh zaroori hai – the youth today is the most burdened lot. If I can make them laugh a while, I’ll be doing social service. Then there is Jagmohan Mundhra’s film where I play a 40-year-old virgin. There are no secrets for the youth today – thanks to the media and increased levels of awareness. They know everything about marriage and what follows. This film will help keep their interest alive and keep enjoying life. Then there is a Ravi Chopra film, two others that I have signed – out of which, one is Suniel Shetty’s Loot – and there is Chai Garam  too,” he says.

But... a 40-year-old virgin? “The original film is a superhit and the Hindi remake is going to be just as exciting. The film is about a guy whose marriage is delayed. He is a good guy but most people either take advantage of that or tag him ‘ bechara’ . It’s a cute film and Jag has signed an Italian and a French actress for the film. Ayesha Takia has been signed from India,” adds Govinda.

And the hen that he is rumoured to have kept to ward off bad luck? He laughs. “People started spreading those rumours twelve years ago,” he says. “They wanted to create panic. And post Partner, they were irked again and they spread that hen rumour. However, I don’t take things lying low anymore. Just recently, there was a rumour that I’m hassled because of ghosts. That was when I came out in the open and said that the only ghost I’m afraid of is Ramkali’s brother’s in Bhootnath! That was one chatpata message!” he chuckles.

As for less chatpata matters – his constituency and elections – Govinda has this to say, “I have to admit that I don’t attend Parliament too often. However, I have solved the problems of my constituency to a great extent. These couple of years have been a different experience for me and I’ll discuss the strategies of the next election with my seniors.”

My rally can draw 2.5 lakh people: Govinda
30 Jun 2008, 1724 hrs IST, PIYALI DASGUPTA ,INDIATIMES NEWS NETWORK

Some say this is Govinda's second phase in Bollywood. Last year, the Salman Khan-Govinda starrer Partner was declared a hit. The film followed a low phase in the actor's life, dogged with rumours of eccentric behaviour, attitude and belief in silly superstitions. But the irrepressible Govinda is back with six films lined up for release and on the sets of Do Knot Disturb  directed by David Dhawan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani.

For the first time, former beauty queens Sushmita Sen and Lara Dutta are working together in the film. The star cast includes Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Ranbir Shorey and Sohail Khan. But Sunday afternoon was clearly Govinda's day as he matched steps with Sushmita (who is over a head and a half taller), waved to crowds calling out to him and posed (for us) next to a helicopter flown in specially for the shoot. David Dhawan, for all his bonhomie with Govinda, is a tough taskmaster. No starry nakhras or free time for PR please. Post pack-up and a few (soft) drinks down, some exclusive time with Govinda...

The actor or the politician...what would Govinda like to be identified as?
(Quickly) The actor...I am always an actor first. acting is my career, politics is not. Acting has given me a stature in life, it has made me who I am today.

So what does politics mean to you?
Politics is a relationship I have with people. It is a triangular relationship- between me, the people of my constituency and Soniaji. I had the honour of being asked to join politics by the Gandhis. They are among the most respected (political) names in the country....

A star, most would say, is removed from reality. Do issues such as rising prices concern you?
There must always be enough food for everyone. Prices may rise but food must always be available. People must be conscious and not fall for rumours or be taken for a ride. Sometimes politicians rake up an issue and keep on about it... aap logon ko baar baar bolte raho ki yeh cheez nahin hain...to unko aur bhi bura lagega ... People must look for an alternative... yeh mehenga hain to kuchh aur sahi ...but no one must be allowed to exploit their hardship.

What about your constituency, Mumbai North? In 2004, you defeated Ram Naik by over 48,000 votes.... (Govinda's constituency stretches from Jogeshwari to Palghar).
The whole look of Mumbai North has changed...it now looks like the rest of Mumbai. There are good roads, big malls and the water issue has been resolved. The Borivali-Virar line has been expanded... yeh koi mamuli kaam nahin hain ...Even Ram Naik as Railway Minister was unable to achieve this. But I have been helped by Soniaji...There is one thing I know...in politics, their (Gandhis) word means everything...

People criticise you...
Those who criticise me are jealous of the relationship I have with people. That's why they target me. I can draw a crowd which few people can do. My rally can draw 2.5 lakh people... mein bhi ghabra jata hoon !

Are you removed from reality?
(Pause) I react to things differently now...the other day, I had to dangle from the 25th storey of a building for a shot. I did it twice and the shot was a hit, but I had to ask them to quickly draw in the rope as I realised that my arms were tired and hurting and needed rest...There was a time when I had to cling to a train for hours together...travelling in Mumbai...but my arms never felt sore...

Is this your second phase in Bollywood?
I was away from work for some time. I thought I would be relaxed and fresh. Being without work is even more tiring. When we exercise, we are tired, but no exercise also causes tiredness to the mind. Being without work tires the mind. When I work I feel fresh... thakaawat nahin hain.

You have some six films lined up for release... but have you moved away from solo starrers?
I like films which are a package... I spend 30-40 days working... there are others to carry the load. In this film ( Do Knot Disturb ) there are others such as Ranbir and Riteish. Aur Sushmita, Lara and Vashu Bhagnani hero se kam nahin hain (laughs heartily)

What do you think of today's debutants?
Most of them are doing well and put in a lot of hard work. I like Ranbir. Abhishek Bachchan, too, though he is not a newcomer. But he looks very good these days and his work is excellent.

Can any of today's debutants replace Govinda?
No one can replace any established star. That's because God has different plans for all of us and no two people are alike. I am what I am because I was put into a certain situation and then I took the opportunity and created the path for myself.

Blogging, TV - what's the future for Govinda?
Blogging (bemused)...TV...yes. (Very upbeat) I am willing to do anything that helps me stay connected to people and gives me respect and stature in life.

When you go to bed, do you get a good night's sleep? Are you happy?
I never got a good night's sleep when I was struggling in my early days...there were many hardships then. When I entered politics, initially it was difficult, because I did not have anyone to show me the way...now I have understood the field and I am comfortable...
Today, yes I get a good night's sleep...I am comfortable with my surroundings and I have created that.

As an afterthought, “ log itne vaade kyon karte hain? Arre yaar...do vaade karo, woh pura karo...”
