Bihari artistes on the line
Manoj Chaurasia
PATNA, Oct. 31: Bihar has now quietly begun to judicially "penalise" those supporting Mr Raj Thackeray's "hate campaign" towards Biharis ~ three of whom have paid with their lives for trying to seek employment opportunities in Mumbai in the recent violence.
Angry at his reported support for Mr Thackeray's ongoing campaigns against Biharis, the Bihar-Jharkhand Motion Pictures Association (BJMPA) has banned Bollywood actor Govinda in the twin states. Under this ban which has already come into force despite the actor clarifying his position on a TV news channel last evening, neither his new films will be released nor his old films be screened in any movie theatre in both Bihar and Jharkhand.
. . .
Film insiders said the ban is likely to cost Govinda and his film producers dearly since Govinda, originally hailing from UP ~ another Hindi-speaking northern state in the firing line of Mr Thackeray's Sena ~ has huge fans and his films have a large viewership in Bihar and Jharkhand. Experts said many of Govinda's films have been box office hits and did tremendous business in the past while his soon-to-be released film Chal Chala Chal is being eagerly awaited by his fans who come from all age-groups.

Mumbai, October 14, 2008
First Published: 22:00 IST(14/10/2008)
Producer Pahlaj Nihalani is finally ready for a sequel to his 1993 blockbuster Aankhen. The producer has been toying with the idea for several years and has finally decided to go ahead. The script is being written and as soon as the final draft is ready, he will make an official announcement.
The buzz in trade circles is that Nihalani wants Rohit, the son of the original director, David Dhawan, to direct the movie but Nihalani refutes this and says that he will not even be repeat the earlier cast.
“Almost two decades have passed. If the sequel is to work, I need to go in for fresh faces and a new director,” says Nihalani. “Only the premise will remain unchanged.”

14 Oct 2008, 0000 hrs IST, Afsana Ahmed,TNN
Bollywood makes strange bedfellows.
And the latest jodi is Jag Mundhra and Bollywood’s maverick actor and MP Govinda! It was Govinda who approached the ace director and asked him to do his next film Naughty@Forty, a comic caper involving a 40-year-old bachelor who is infatuated by a young girl. Jag, initially, was reluctant because from the sounds of it, this appeared to be a “ Govinda kind of film”. And Jag admitted, “It was low brow, which I’ve never attempted before, I’m more used to the Woody Allen kind of comedy.” But Govinda persevered, he got Anupam Kher (who is also in the film) to counsel Jag, and soon the director was ready. “ Govinda’s films sell big time, I believe, and he placed all his trust in me, which was a great incentive,” said Jag. “He told me that we would be the next hit jodi like David Dhawan and him earlier.” Jag, who has made films like Provoked, Kamal and Backwater, had offered Govinda a role a few years ago when the actor’s career was on a slump. “But he humbly declined saying he wasn’t in the position to take on a solo film as he wasn’t hot at the box office. I liked his humility,” revealed Jag. But Partner changed Govinda’s fortunes and the actor, along with producer Sanddeep Kapur and Anuj Sharma, went to meet Jag in London and that’s how Naughty@Forty happened. The romantic lead opposite Govinda has yet to be finalised. “We are auditioning,” admitted Jag. Twenty days of shooting in London is over already. The unit now shifts to India. The film has music by Monty Sharma who did Saawariya.

Caroline relishes Bollywood role MILES JERMY 18 September 2008
IT is a glamorous world of big screen idols, glitzy premieres, adoring fans and songs and saris.
Now former Caister schoolgirl, turned actress Caroline Boulton, is looking forward to seeing her name in lights alongside the stars of Bollywood.
Caroline is getting her first taste of India's multi-million-pound movie industry, starring in a film called King Kon.
It is the latest high profile role for the former Phyllis Adams School of Dance student, who now lives in London.
While many actors dream of going to Hollywood Caroline is looking forward to heading to India's movie capital Mumbai.
Scenes for the film, a comedy about an Indian con artist called Lucky who ends up as a participant in a reality TV show, have already been shot in Yorkshire.
Caroline, who plays the role of the show's presenter, has already got a taste of the fervour around Bollywood film stars.
She said: “The leading man is Govinda who is a hugely successful comedy actor in India and the director has won many Zee awards, which are like Bollywood Oscars.
“When we were filming in Leeds an enormous crowd gathered around Govinda to get his autograph, so he must be popular.
“It's a very big production and they are building all the film sets ready for us in an enormous studio in Mumbai.
“I am not expecting to take part in any song and dance routines and speak any Hindi unless they surprise me with new scripts.
“There are a growing number of roles for English actors in Bollywood, it is a huge industry with increasing numbers of Indian films shot in the UK with British Film Council support.”
King Kon is due to be released next year and is expected be shown at Bollywood screening cinemas around Britain.

The Times of India - India Times An ideal Partner 16 Sep 2008, 0038 hrs IST, SUBHASH K JHA ,TNN
Govinda’s daughter Narmada is all set to make her Bollywood debut and the buzz is that Govinda’s buddy-bhai Salman Khan will be launching the PYT.
. . .
And it is not just his personal life that Govinda is thrilled about. A television report that Govinda’s political constituency in Mumbai North is the second-most prosperous and well-developed in Mumbai has left Govinda feeling elated. He now plans to visit Sonia Gandhi with the information.
“I don’t think she has heard it yet. The news will reach her soon. But the survey saying that my constituency has improved to this extent has left me feeling happier than I have felt since a long time. My detractors have been having a field-day. Everyone has been taking potshots about me being an amateur politician. And now they’ll have to find someone else to gherao,” he said triumphantly.
Govinda is also changing his approach to his filmi career. “I’ve four films in hand which I’ll complete by October. In November I start Mani Ratnam’s film. And then I’ll do only one film at a time. There was a time when I simultaneously did 40 films,” he says.

Sallu's brother gets candid and speaks his heart out
By Johnny Vaz . Buzz18 Sep 13, 2008 . . .
You are planning to produce a sequel Partner 2 as well as a remake of Amar Akbar Anthony?
Yes I am playing Rishi Kapoor's part. Partner 2 will of course have Govinda and Salman. But the leading ladies Katrina Kaif and Lara Dutta will change. Govinda keeps embarrassing us by praising bhai and me all the time.
Tell us about your productional venture Main Aur Mrs Khanna, which is also, is being directed by debutant Prem Soni?
I play an Aurstralian NRI who has an unrequited love for Kareena Kapoor. Sohail says that Prem Soni is yet another director to watch out for in the near future. He is a tremendous director with a lot of potentials. The film is shot in Melbourne it is a good blend between romantic and comedy. I simply loved the script that Prem Soni had given to me. It is simple and breezy film and he has taken the script to another level. He is very competent and clear in his work. We are planning a 20 days shooting schedule in Mumbai and Dalhousie soon," says Sohail.
