Govinda Ahuja
Oh, the confusion
Saturday, September 13, 2008 - 5:40 PM

Govinda, Sonam Shashi Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever and  Asha Parekh were in a film together titled Raiszaada which was released in 1991.  The Central Board of Film Certification shows this title as does the background shots for the musical number Raiszaada, Raiszaada with a prominently lit sign above Sonam and Govinda.

At some point, website managers began adhering the title Raeeszada to the Govinda flicker.  Raeeszada was a movie released in 1976 and starred Vikram, Zarina Wahab, Rakesh Roshan, Helen, Baldev Khosa, Kunwar Ajit and Shriram Lagu and directed by Rajthakur.

The confusion has even led to the mislabelling of the titled films - a purchased DVD from Eros Entertainment, bearing the correct jacket and cd label, was burned with the incorrect film.  One mislabel may be a casual mistake on the part of the underpaid, over-worked factory personnel, but to receive four different mislabels under four different distribution companies and each film bearing the branding of four differing marketing corporations speaks of incompetence.

Without disparaging otherwise reputable and dedicated companies, the only correct version I have located is released with the Captain Video branding and distributed by Aditi Home Entertainment in VCD format only.  The cover art bears Govinda in a red jacket and pointing to a liquor bottle with debonair Shashi Kapoor touting lavender-tinted hair - quite distinctive.  The VCD is packaged with the title in Hindi only.

Regardless of where you purchse your films, you should immediately open and view the opening sequence to ensure you have the correct title.  The 1976 film begins with people arriving with gifts at a family home, there is no Central Board of Film Certificate, nor no title and all the characters have 70s hair, of course.  The 1991 movie is a sequence of still shots of Govinda bearing a revolver and looking menacing, for him.

A major consideration is the point of renumeration if you do receive an incorrect title.  The cost of the India prints is minor - $2.99 USD for VCD’s and usually $7.99 USD for DVD’s.  The cost of the shipping can be formidable, especially Air Bills which may be the only option offered by some companies.  Do not forget the hassle of communicating the problem and having it corrected, well, correctly.

Knowing now that this title is predominently mislabelled and/or misburned I hope the images I provide will assist the collectors and afficianados.
